Professional Bartending As A Career Move

If you're looking for an exciting career with great opportunities, then professional bartending may be a good career choice for you. Before choosing that career, however, you'll need to decide whether you're willing to accept the risks and responsibilities that go hand in hand with a bartending job.
Make sure the local demand for bartenders is high enough that you won't have to struggle to find an open position. Having the right skills and traits, or knowing where and how to acquire them, will also make a world of difference.
Bartending professionally requires a pretty specific skill set. Some say the most important qualification for being a good barkeep is exceptional social skills. Bartenders do best when they use humorous, friendly, borderline flirtatious attitudes.
The truth is, most people become more social when they're drinking. It would only make sense, then, that they would want a bartender who can joke around with them, and even join them in conversation.
When a customer feels as though the bartender is "one of them," they generally tip much better. As a bartender, your income depends heavily on what tips your customers give you. The second most important prerequisite for being a bartender is having a detailed memory.
A barman or barmaid, as a general rule, simply does not have the time to be writing down orders or looking up mixed drink recipes. In order to be successful, they must be able to instantly recall the steps and ingredients necessary to make any drink the customer orders. The longer it takes to make the drinks, the less money is made.
While keeping a friendly attitude is important for a female bartender, it is even more important to ensure that your customers do not misread your sociability. Some men can be dangerous when intoxicated, so they need to understand where the line is drawn.
Many bars now have a policy that all employees walk in groups of 2 or more to their vehicles at the end of the night, to minimize risks of unruly customers causing trouble. Watching for suspicious behavior, as well as refusing to sell alcohol to an already intoxicated customer, will also help reduce risks common to professional bartending. This may mean asking an aggressive customer to leave the establishment.
Professional bartending definitely has its pros and cons. As a bartender, it's much harder to avoid drinking too much or too often. Many people have found that they cannot handle being around alcohol all the time, as "social" drinking often becomes a daily event.
The right person, however, can easily earn a very good income working only part time. You'll meet some interesting people, many of whom may become "regulars." You'll hear hilarious stories, and develop great friendships with co-workers and customers. If you have the personality, then providing bartending services can be a wonderful and exciting career path.

The new, hot alcohol trend across the U.S. has been micro-brews. Breweries are popping up everywhere from small towns in the Rocky Mountains to city dwellings like Philadelphia. Everyone has to try the new hometown brew and is even more excited if they discover something ‘unknown' to their friends and fellow beer-geeks. Here in Florida, it has been a slower process. We are not surrounded by breweries and even have a hard time getting some of these unknown beers in the state.

I hear it all too often – a strange and unnecessary fear of dark beer. Many folks have come to the conclusion that dark beer=bitter, heavy motor oil, unworthy of sipping on a sunny day. I'm going to flat out say, NOT TRUE. Not in all instances at least. You just have to know what you are drinking because dark beer can be heavy, hearty and bitter. Professional Tips On Becoming A Better Bartender

Professional Tips On Becoming A Better Bartender
New bartenders often hear the words "Bartender License: and get nervous or confused. The truth is, you don't need any license to become a bartender (you just need a job that says you are a bartender!)
Bartending Schools will promise you a "Bartender Certificate" but they really can't do much in the way of getting you a job (expect giving you endless job postings). You can learn a lot and gain a ton of confidence at a Bartending School, but there are plenty of tips (such as service and personality) that can't ever be taught at a school.
So here's a little list of professional tips that will help you become a better bartender.
1. Acknowledge all new customers as they approach the bar. Even if you are swamped, a quick nod or smile will ease a restless (and thirsty) mind. Establish rapport when welcoming customers and introduce yourself as though you already knew them. When the opportunity arises, introduce yourself and ask their names. Remember their faces and drinks that they order. With this manner, people love you because they feel that they are important to you and you had shown them how friendly you are.
2. Prepare some JOKES or stories! Storytelling is POWERFUL! Start entertaining your customers with some little jokes or stories. Keep them interesting but also politically correct! Doing your job as a bartender is entertaining specially when you can create or share some jokes to your customers. Choose jokes that are applicable to anyone. Jokes that talks nothing about religion, politics and other related terms which people may ignite their defensive thoughts.
3. Prepare the drinks well and deliver them quick. Speed is of the essence! If What customers want is having the taste of the drinks that they are looking for and a fast service. They came to you because they want to have their desired drinks. So be prepared for the drinks recipes and make sure to have the ability to memorize and master trendy drinks mixes to be able you to serve them fast. If you are swamped and customers have to wait, here is all you need to do: 1. Acknowledge them. 2. Hussle and work at 100% effort. 3. Apologize for the delay with a big smile.
4. Warm handshake when customer exits. As the customers finished and about to exit, give them a warm thank you and a hand shake them to let them feel they are always important and pleasing customers to you.
5. Eliminate Hesitation. Know your drink recipes! If a customer throws out a crazy made-up name, don't worry, just ask them what's in it, what color it is, and what it tastes like. Always have a mixing guide at your disposal but do your best to never ever need it!
6. Keep personal hygiene. This is important. Have a clean look. Be presentable and make sure you don't smell bad. Have mints nearby at all time. Bartenders are always part of bar's atmosphere so your personal attributes and appearance does matter.
These are a few of the many tips and techniques that any veteran bartender will share with you. The important thing to realize is that the true skills of bartending go far beyond mixing and memorizing. It is about the CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE and the service you provide for them! Work hard and always have a smile on your face and you can never do wrong!

So How Do You Find and Hire a Professional Bartender For Your Event

So How Do You Find and Hire a Professional Bartender For Your Event
So you're planning your wedding reception or a company event and you know you'll want to have a bartender/s available to serve your quests those fancy blended drinks or to pour and serve a glass of champagne to help get your guests in the party mood.
Having a professional bartender for your wedding reception or party is an important ingredient for the success of any event. You want your guests to relax and have a good time and having a cocktail is a great way to get everyone to relax and socialize.
But what is a good bartender and how do you know one when you see one?
Not so long ago I was a bartender by trade. I worked for a few years as a bartender for hotels and restaurants as well as private catering companies. I worked hotel bars with a cocktail server calling out an order of maybe fifteen or more drinks and I could remember each drink and have them all ready for delivery in no time. I have worked events with a guest list of 500 people and with the help of other bartenders kept everyone served and happy.
Because of my experience working as a bartender I have a pretty good idea of what a good bartender is and what to look for when you need to hire one.
So what makes a great bartender and how do you find one you can trust to do the job?
A professional bartender is:
-Someone who shows up on time and is dressed for the occasion and even better yet can make a good blended drink.
-A professional should be able to serve your guests efficiently and with a smile!
-A professional bartender should also be able to monitor the guests so they don't over consume.
-A true mixologist when asked should be able to tell you the ingredients for any number of drinks.
-An experienced bartender should be able to pour a good drink without over pouring.
-And an experienced bartender should be able to give you an idea of what kind of alcohol to serve for your type of event and how much alcohol to order for a specific number of guests.
How to find a good bartender:
-You can get recommendations from family and friends.
-If you've booked a venue ask to see their list of preferred vendors.
-If you have an event or wedding planner they should be able to recommend freelance bartenders or a bartender service that they've worked with.
-If you've hired a caterer they may have a bartender service they use or can recommend.
-But be cautious when accepting recommendations from vendors you have never done business with before. You should still take the time to check out the recommended bartender or service for yourself.
To better help you make an informed decision:
It's a good idea to do some research on the going rate for bartender services. Go online and check out various bartender services some post the cost of their service online. Or call around for quotes.
When speaking with a freelance bartender or bartender service clarify what exactly is included in their service. For example for a freelance bartender ask if they supply their own bartender kit? For a bartender service ask about attire, licenses. Who supplies blender, glasses ice etc.
While granted this article doesn't give you everything you need to know about hiring a bartender it will I think give you a good idea of how to begin your search and it also provides you with a couple of the important questions that you'll need to ask and get answers to when hiring a bartender. Hopefully with this information in hand you'll be able to find the best professional bartender-a bartender that will help make your event a success.
