The complete guide to being a bartender

Starting out in a industry that requires not only long working hours but a solid work ethics is a difficult task on its own. What if there was a guide to get you through your shift, smiling all the way to the bank? Bad news, there isn't but what I can tell you is that if you follow certain âguideâ rules you should be better off then the same man standing in the bar next to you.
Don't piss where you eat
My mother would tell me that and it wasn't until I reached a certain age that I understood. Being a bartender is difficult work and can affect your personal well being. Thatâs why as a rule one should never drink where they work. The rules here being if you wouldnât do it at home, donât do it at work. It may sound unfair but in the long run you should reap the benefits of this isolation policy when co-workers are being fired and every one still thinks youâre a saint.
Stay clean or stay away
It goes without saying that if your going to be working take the time to look after yourself. This implies shaving, keeping your hair tidy and at all times ensuring you just look well groomed. It will not only make you more approachable but will give off an amazing first impression one that will attract the customers who will in turn tip you better.
Work smart, not hard (except when you busy)
Keep a book with you so at all times and fill in the recipes used to make certain drinks. This way you should remember them better. Then when you don't, you have your book which should save you time and embarrassment when handling clients. When the bar does pick up and people are waiting in line don't forget to smile. Smiling will not only cool them down but pick your own mood up. That should make for a better evening for all concerned.
Drinking and driving isn't smart
I've heard the arguments a million times. There is no excuse for drinking behind the bar while you are serving clients. If a client buys you a drink ring it up and have your drinks when the bar is closed. A drunk bartender costs money, which in turn makes them bad. You may not have as much fun as the person standing next to you but your boss will appreciate you more for it and in the long term you again will reap the benefits of this isolation policy.
FILO Method
This simple term is used to teach second year students studying cost and management accounting a basic principle. First in, last out. When working this should be your approach but when working in a bar this should be your motto. The only other person who will use the same method as you will be your boss. This gives you time to show him youâre reliable, dependent and responsible. If nothing more you will have a glowing reference letter when you leave your job. Never underestimate the need for good relations with past employers as their reference might be the reason you never got the new job you've been eying.

Do you really need a structured settlement company?
A structured settlement is usually an out of court settlement that is offered to an individual by their insurance firm or a specific company. A structured settlement company handles and organizes the payment schedule. These payment amounts are substantial in size and can last from several short years from your entire life time.

Does a structured settlement transfer have any advantages
Structured settlements started coming into being during the 1980's, when courts awarded amounts to be paid to plaintiffs and the person charged with this amount could not afford the entire lump sum immediately. Then, the structured settlement was born, where this lump sum would be paid of in a particular schedule of time. This included weekly, monthly or yearly payments depending on the contract signed between the two people in the legal action.

Getting cash for a structured settlement payment
Most of the individuals who are awarded structured settlement plans are very unwise and do not wish to wait for the number of years for the full amount to be paid out, especially if it is a structured settlement payment plan that has been decided to be paid out over the beneficiaries entire life-time. These people want the entire amount to be paid out rather in one big sum, rather then getting however many smaller sums.

A Bartenders Guide To Mobile Bartending

Are you interested in starting the exciting and lucrative career choice of Mobile Bartending? Nothing is quite as exciting as pouring drinks and entertaining guests at a wedding, backyard birthday or other special event and getting paid massive tips!
What is Mobile Bartending?
Mobile bartending simply means you provide services that can travel to places where a client or customer request you to appear to bartend for them. You will find yourself pouring drinks at weddings, birthday parties, corporate events, and more! You may do the bartender's job or you can hire bartenders to do the job for you. People love to throw parties, and they are always looking for a bartender! The important role you must do is provide services that customers may want.
What you need to start a mobile bartending business?
The greatest thing about Mobile Bartending is that there are very little start-up costs! Below is a list of the ESSENTIAL items you'll need to get started by this very weekend:
* Cocktail shaker
* Corkscrew/wine-opener
* Nice clothes (all black collared shirt works!)
* Basic Mixing Knowledge
* A Smile and a Pleasant Personality
THAT'S IT! Sure there is more you can get such as a portable bar, and other mixing tools, but you are being paid for your service of mixing and pouring cocktails, and that's all you really need! Again, you can add more optional equipments for an additional fee like shaker, drink service mat, strainer, shot jigger and etc.
How do I get Get Clients & Book Gigs?
There are several ways to get started without spending very much money on advertising. To begin, let all of your friends and family know what you are doing. Try to land a gig or two at a discounted price from a friend, neighbor or anyone in your "Sphere of Influence." From here, you can promote your business AT the event WHILE you're bartending.
I also suggest getting business cards as quickly as possible, and then proceed to get your website online. Contact caterers, event planners and DJs and trade contact information with them and encourage referrals.
For now, try to avoid paying more for advertising, there are plenty of free ways to promote your business!

The drink guide every bartender should have

Being a good bartender is easy, being an educated bartender takes hours of practice and parrot learning. Being able to make a drink a customer will ask for no matter how strange the drink may be is what will separate you from the rest of the crowd. With so many drinks on the market how does one go about learning and more importantly trying to remember so many drinks what to a sane individual would all be the same. Begin with a pen and paper!
There’s a reason why bartenders are considered to be such high risk personal to cover by insurance companies, because we are! The truth is we are not sane people; we are an individual who thrive under pressure and that’s why every drink is unique. Ask a barman to recommend a drink and a 45minuite conversation will ensue about strength, texture, color and even the bitterness of the respective drink being scrutinized.
With all these recipes that you can learn none will be as effective as creating your own. Entering the night life with intent to build a career from it will only further advance your career if you create your own drinks. An example of this is in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Jager bombs are common drink through out the world. Being Jagermeister in a shot glass placed in a tumbler glass. The tumbler glass is then filled to the rim of the tot glass with a fizzy energy drink. A bartender created the budget bomb. The budget bomb follows the same principle but instead of Jagermeister they use cheap brandy. He also replaced the energy drink with a local beer.
There is however a standard, one that most barmen should know or at lest have a list in case they don't remember.
Alabama Slammer
30ml Amaretto
30ml Southern comfort
1 dash lemon juice
Directions
Mix the Amaretto and southern comfort in a mixing jar filled with ice. Pour in a chilled cocktail glass. Add dash of lemon juice to the cocktail glass, stir and serve.

1 table spoon of grenadine
15ml Vermouth (Dry)
15ml Brandy
1 splash crème de Menthe (White)
1 dash port
Directions
Pour all ingredients in mixing jar with ice and shake. Pour contents into a cocktail glass and add the dash of port at the end.
Bahama Mama
1 dash Amaretto
1 dash Grenadine
60ml Pineapple juice
60ml Rum
2ml Sugar syrup
1 slice of pineapple
1 quarter apple
Directions
Mix fruit first and blend according to texture desired. Then add all contents to the blender and mix accordingly. Pour drink over crushed ice and serve with cherry garnish.
Bloody Mary
30ml vodka
1 dash Tabasco sauce
1 dash lemon juice
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
120ml Tomato juice
Salt and Pepper (Depends on customer)
Directions
Pour all the contents into a glass filled with ice. Then stir contents and add tomato juice. Stir again properly. Add salt and pepper as to customer’s discretion.

Most of the individuals who are awarded structured settlement plans are very unwise and do not wish to wait for the number of years for the full amount to be paid out, especially if it is a structured settlement payment plan that has been decided to be paid out over the beneficiaries entire life-time. Read in a bartender guide that customers prefer bartenders who read newspapers?

Question by Castle: Read in a bartender guide that customers prefer bartenders who read newspapers?
and who are up on the news in society, as they may not have time to read themselves so they go to a bar just to learn about current events from bartenders, is this true? What kinds of bars function this way? certainly not night clubs?
and what if you do not like to read newspapers?

Answer by HKPhooey
Speaking from experience behind the bar, basically it depends on the type of bar that you are working at. Always good to keep up to date, dont have to get it from a news paper though. Stay away from religion and politics. And being a guy, most customers came in asking for final scores, and who won what game, who are they playing next, who has been traded where... Just try and figure out what kind of people go to your bar and you should be fine

11:00 A.M.
Opening the door to the bar was like opening the gates to hell. As the door swung open I was hit full face with a blast of smoke and beer fumes that attacked my nostrils and singed what was left of my nose hairs. Stepping inside my eyes adjusted to the low light and I saw that I was in a dimly lit humanity dump filled to the brim with rush hour casualties like myself.
The sign outside didn't say anything about live entertainment, but there up on stage sitting on a stool that looked as if it would collapse at any moment from the excessive weight it was supporting, was Uncle Happy, a 400 pound, tattooed accordion player, belting out what may once have been a song.
As Uncle Happy's excruciating, ear drum splitting tunes erupted from his accordion, giving everyone in this shit hole including myself a legitimate reason to get hammered, I walked over to the bar and pulled up a seat on an empty stool next to what looked like a completely obliterated, drunk off his ass rush hour statistic.
"How you doing?" I said to my new found bar buddy.
The poor slob just looked up at me with drool hanging off his face and mumbled something about a guy with a stick and fell face first into a puddle of beer on the bar.
"Whatch ya have mister?" Rasped the barkeep.
I looked up from one miserable sight to another and some how managed to keep from laughing as I ordered a scotch and soda from a bartender who looked like a merchant marine in a dress. It was a disgusting sight with thick forests of curling body hair framed by the low plunge neckline of the dress it was wearing. When he or she, bent down to pick up a bottle, I thought I was going to puke as it's skirt slipped up over it=s fat ass giving us sitting at the bar a clear shot of a pimpled, hairy moon.
As Popeye in a dress served me my drink, I tried as hard as I could not to laugh or say anything remotely offensive, because although he may have been a little feminine and confused about his dressing preference, but make no mistake about it. This thing in a dress was a human muscle that if angered and properly agitated, could shred my ass to pieces in a heartbeat, and I didn't want to add a trip to the emergency room to a already full agenda of things that I didn=t want to do.
Tipping my head back, I downed the first drink and motioned for Popeye to pour another. After downing the second drink I could feel the alcohol starting to take hold and I motioned for another and poured it too down my throat. The bar I was sitting in was another pit stop on the shit hole express of life. The booze was cheep and watered down and the ambiance was so bad that I thought at first that I had somehow ingested something and I was hallucinating. But no, fact was that for the moment I was here, and like it or not, this was my reality.
I looked over at the guy who was sitting on the other side of me, who was by this point brain damaged from too much cheap booze and was slurring out something about how life wasn't fair. I figured that if he told me his life story that given his current state of being, it would have to be sadder then mine and it might be refreshing to hear about someone worse off than myself.
"So,." I began,. "What the hell's your problem?"
I watched as this poor specimen of humanity raised his hand as if to begin a sentence, paused, then his face contorted and his body slid slowly to the floor of the bar. My bar buddies were proving to be a disappointing lot.
As I looked down at the poor pathetic creature, laid sprawled out on the filthy floor of the bar, I noticed that the music stopped. I looked up and saw a sight that sent a chill up my spine. Happy, and his four hundred pounds of muscle was heading this way like a run away freight train. At first I thought it was me who had done something wrong. Perhaps the poor slob on the floor next to me was one of his relatives and he now wanted to beat me up for hurting him.
Much to my relief, however, Happy sped past, picked the poor slob next to me off the floor, and after a couple of brutal face slaps, Happy tossed the guy what must have been 30 feet across the room and right through the front door. It appeared that Happy was a double threat, musician and bouncer. And just as he had stopped, Happy walked back over to the stage, took his seat, picked up his instrument and began to play some more of his accordion nightmares as if nothing had ever happened.
It was time to pay my bill and get the hell out of desperation café before I did something to warrant a visit from Happy. Before I could act, however, some guy in the audience decided to comment on Happy's accordion playing. The fun wasn=t over, it was just beginning.
"Hey, don't you know anything else? " The booze‑addled buffoon challenged, defiantly.
The place fell deathly silent as Happy once again put down his accordion and walked over to where the poor slob who had made the comment was sitting. As the guy pleaded for Happy not to hit him, Happy repeatedly slapped the guy about the face until he thought that he had enough. Then just as he had started, Happy put the whimpering gentleman back down in his chair, walked back over to the stage and started to play his accordion again.
"Excuse me, ma'am? Can I please pay my tab?" I asked.
The warning signs were all there. I should have known that there was no way that anything happening in this horrific hell hole could end well. The thing in a dress walked over, leaned over the counter so that I had a full shot of it's hairy chest, and told me that the bill was .50.
" bucks?" I protested." I only had four watered down scotches!. What are you trying to do here, rip me off? !"
I noticed that the music had stopped again and I looked to see Happy in a full charge heading my way. I looked back at the thing in the dress for an explanation and it said.
"So you think we water down our drinks?"
"Happy !". The it shouted out. "Seems we have a customer here who doesn't want to pay his bill." explained the barkeep, unnecessarily.
For some stupid reason I decided to continue with a pitiful macho defense.
"Look I said, I'm not paying this."
That's as far as I got because Happy clutched the back of my neck with his cinder block hands, instantly shutting off my ability to speak. With Happy threatening to snap my neck I figured I had little choice except to pay. But before I could voluntarily give up the cash, Happy tore the money out of my pants pocket and threw it on the bar. He then picked me up and sent me sprawling through the front door and out on my ass onto the sidewalk.
I was completely humiliated, but happy; (no pun) intended to be alive. Brushing myself off, I staggered over to where my stolen bike was parked, climbed on and headed off to my job interview.
