Cocktail: A Great Mixed Drink
Posted: Feb 09, 2011 |Comments: 0
|
A cocktail is a mixed drink that is popular all over the world. It is a liquor composed of different flavoring agents like honey, milk, sauces, spices, cream and sauces. Even though it has been prohibited in the U.S., it still became very popular. Most bartenders are combining alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages with the drink and this makes it dangerous to consume.
The old versions of cocktails were created by mixing whisky, gin or rum along with a bit of vodka. This type of mixed drinks came to the surface during 1980's and one traditional way of making cocktails is mixing it with gin such as gimlet or martini. In October 2005, Dr. David Wonderich coined the term cocktail.
One great benefit that you can get from cocktail is being relieved from head aches. Cocktail is known as bitter sling for it is mainly composed of water, sugar and bitter agents. The cocktail serves mainly those who are brave at heart. Someone who can take the challenge of consuming cocktail in just one sip can stand at almost any drink.
Cocktails are available in many recipes, each one having a one of a kind taste. It all depends upon the taste of bar owners, but you can commonly see these types at bars: Flips, Toddies, Cobblers, Slings Sours, Punchers, etc.
Compared to other drinks, cocktail has a smaller amount of alcohol content. The prices of cocktails and drinks significantly vary. Cocktails are now prepared differently, mixing other types of drinks like whisky, gin, milk and cream. Water is no longer included in the list. Different regions prepare cocktails in different manners.
Cocktails are served appropriately using a cocktail glass, depending on the type of cocktail drink created. Some common cocktail glasses include Champagne, High Ball, Low Ball, Margarita, Martini, Wine, Shot and Rocks glasses. They are designed in a special manner to prevent a sudden change in temperature.

Beer Cocktails – Variety Is the Spice of Life
For most beer lovers, drinking a cold one is a reward in itself, whether you choose to drink it from a goblet, mug, flute glass, weizen glass, stange or (heaven forbid) right from the bottle. However, some drinkers are standing things on their ear. Beer cocktails are becoming more and more popular - these do quite a bit more than just transfer that beautiful beverage to a container to better enhance the head, aroma and flavor.

How to Make a Tom Collins Cocktail
This drink is credited to a Mr John Collins, a bartender at the Limmers hotel in London in the 1800s. The drink was called the Tom Collins, taking its name from the use of Old Tom Gin, and apparently named after his brother. The sister of the Collins is the Fizz, which is a short Collins with charged water (from a soda siphon) and un-garnished. Add egg white to make a Silver Fizz; add the yolk and it becomes a Golden Fizz.

Really how has this idea not came about already.

The Importance of Replacement Water Filter Cartridges
Let's just say, hypothetically, that you recently had your eyes opened to the truth about your local tap water. Meaning you recently found out that while your tap water is regularly treated through your local water treatment facility, it actually doesn't pick up one hundred percent of the contaminants found in your tap water.

Drink to Your Health with UV Water Filters
any of us are rightfully concerned about the quality of water that we drink. Cocktail parties are the perfect answer when interesting people and conversation, mingling, good food and drink are your party planning objectives. Clever cocktail party planning can achieve all of these with some good planning and a little effort.
Some of the critical secrets to great cocktail party planning are:
Invite interesting people who like to mingle and talk.
Stage your food and drink so people need and want to move around.
Plan 6-8 really tasty, but easy to eat, canapés.
Engage your guests in the party and with other guests through a fun ice breaker.
The Guests are the Key Ingredient
Cocktail parties are the ideal avenue in which to introduce new people to a group of others. Choosing the right guests is critical however. If you want to introduce a friend from out of town, your boss, an important client, or even your new love to people you want them to know, consider these points:
Invite guests who like to talk and have something interesting to say.
Don't invite guests who tend to incite arguments or unnecessarily heated debates.
Let your guests know a little about your special guest in advance.
If it is important for your special guest to meet and mingle with specific people, let them know and be sure they get introduced to each other.
Keep your eye on your special guest throughout the evening.
Consider asking a trusted and close friend to be a "shadow" to your special guest. If they wind up alone or with an empty glass, they can help.
Send out invitations at least three weeks in advance, if possible, and get commitments from people that they will be attending. This may take some phone calling. Butâ¦it's critical for your cocktail party planning process, and more importantly, for the mix and mingle factor so important to a great cocktail party.
You want to invite enough people to make your house feel full, but not stuffed.
Mix and Mingle Logistics
Great cocktail party planning allows and encourages guests to move around and meet new people. Staging your food and drink strategically can help this. Place your food and drinks around the party area so they are easy to get to and require people to seek out the goodies you have prepared⦠and other people.
Wine and wine glasses can be place on a sideboard. Punch or a specialty drink can be served from a dining table or side buffet. Soft drinks, ice, liquor, and garnishes need to be near the kitchen. Be sure to have lots of beverage napkins wherever you have food or drink also.
Place small plates of nuts and candy around the house. Use your cocktail table for two of your canapés. Place the other canapés in places where you want your guests to wander â a living room end table, the dining table, on a porch, poolside, or on the balcony. If you have a kitchen pass-through or an open counter between the kitchen and the living area, that's ideal for a hot canapé that will need replenishing.
A logistic plan like this will keep the party and the party goers moving and mixing. Another tip to save your furniture and make it easy on your guests is to place coasters around the house. They make it easy to set down a glass and get a tasty mouthful.
If you plan to have hired help, first get a bartender. You'll need one for about every 50 guests. If you choose to have servers also, have them remove dirty napkins, canapé plates (if you use them,) and empty glasses. If your home or apartment is going to be a tight squeeze with all of your guests, consider having the canapés passed by the servers. This will reduce mixing and mingling however.
Tasty Canapés are a Hit
6-8 really special canapés are better than a table loaded down with chips, dips, and hard to handle munchies. Choose a variety of ingredients and make sure they can be picked up with one hand and eaten in one or two bites. Serve some hot and some cold. Plan for 10-12 canapés per guest. Here are some suggestions:
Hot canapés
Bacon wrapped scallops with a sherry and teriyaki marinade
Ramaki â broiled bacon wrapped chicken livers and water chestnuts
Brie bites toasted on savory crackers and topped with a dollop of preserves
Mini skewers with one chicken chunk and a piece of pineapple
Crab dip in mini cream puffs
Cheddar spread on toast rounds topped with mango chutney and crisp bacon bits and broiled until the cheese is warm and a little bubbly
Mini quiche or savory tarts
Broiled blue cheese stuffed button mushrooms
Garlic mashed potatoes topped with parmesan and toasted hazelnuts served in individual spoons.
Cold canapés
Chilled cocktail shrimp with zesty horseradish mayonnaise dip
Savory finger sandwiches of egg, salmon, chicken, lobster, and shrimp salads
Fresh fruit kabobs on bamboo toothpicks â no more than three small colorful pieces of fruit on each.
Devilled eggs topped with petite shrimp
Peanut butter on savory crackers topped with dill pickle relish
Boiled amd chilled half baby red potatoes topped with sour cream, caviar, and a light splash of good vodka. (Be sure to cook the potatoes in salty water)
Pickles, olives, and pickled vegetables (green beans, cauliflower, asparagus tips, mushrooms)
Sushi
Shot glasses of gazpacho topped with a piece of crab meat
Food ideas are endless. Just remember they need to be able to be eaten with one hand and in 1-2 bites and your guests will gobble them up!
A Fun and Not too Hokey Ice Breaker
Write an interesting fact about each of your guests on a self adhesive sticker. Leave the backing on the sticker and as each guest arrives give them a sticker with a fact about someone else on it. Ask each guest to seek out during the party the individual the sticker belongs to. Once they find the individual the sticker describes, they should hand over the sticker so he or she can place the sticker on themselves where others can see it.
This gives each guest a reason to seek out people they might not know, to mix and mingle, and once a sticker is displayed on a guest it gives everyone something to discuss with that individual when they meet them.
Here are some ideas about the kinds of interesting facts that will spark conversation:
Just returned from a trip to China
Won a sporting event recently
Has a new baby
Just changed jobs
Is moving to a new city
Wrote a book and got it published
Is a professional singer/dancer/musician
Ran a marathon in the last year
Has a vintage car
Loves live concerts
Collects coins/stamps/recipes
These are all somewhat gender neutral and "safe" topics to discuss with a new acquaintance. The idea is to give two people who may not know each other something interesting to talk about and have some fun with it.
Try a few of these ideas and you will accomplish your cocktail party planning objectives. You and your guests will all have a fun and memorable evening to remember. They may have a new friend or two also!

Ponytail... No its Cocktail... Already In The Air
Posted: Jul 12, 2010 |Comments: 0

Cocktail is one of the most preferred drinks and being aa blend of different drinks, it seems so exhilarating and enlivening. The splendid aroma of a perfect blend... Nothing can be so mind blowing than this. How many of you have tried going off the track and trying out something new... well then this is your chance. You will simply love it.
Whenever we speak about Cocktails, the first name which comes to our mind is Harry Craddock, the 'Father of Cocktail'- at least for me. The varieties of combinations that he gave after mixing different drinks is just amazing. Harry invented the most loved cocktails – Dry Martini Cocktail and White Lady Cocktail.
Cocktail, as we know is used figuratively for a mixture of liquids or other substances or in more simpler terms, it is a stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters (A bitter is an alcoholic beverage that is flavored with herbal essence and has a bitter or bittersweet flavor), fruit juice, fruit, soda, ice, honey, milk, cream or herbs. The first guidelines for the bartenders in cocktail recipes was published in the year 1862 which listed several types of mixed drinks recipes such as Punches, Sours, Slings, Cobblers, Shrubs, Toddies, Flips along with ten different recipes for cocktails.
There are different types of cocktails both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. In alcoholic cocktail it is again subdivided into different categories:
Cocktails with absinthe
Cocktails with beer
Cocktails with brandy or cognac
Cocktails with cachaça
Cocktails with gin
Cocktails with rum
Cocktails with sake
Cocktails with tequila
Cocktails with vodka
Cocktails with whiskey/whisky or bourbon
Cocktails with wine, sparkling wine, or port
Cocktails with a liqueur (A liqueur is an alcoholic beverage that has been flavored with fruit, herbs, nuts, spices, flowers, or cream and bottled with added sugar) as the primary ingredient
Fruit liqueurs
After the varieties of drinks in different flavors and tastes the most important thing is how it is served. Cocktail is a very sophisticated drink and it has its own elegance in presentation. Hence utmost care is taken while serving the drink. Every combination has a specific way of presentation and glasses to serve.
The original cocktail glasses are stemmed glasses with cone shape often mistaken with martini glass. The stem has a flat base at the bottom. The role of the base is that it does not only hold the glass and does not let the temperature affect the drink. The standard size of cocktail glasses is 4.5 fl oz. Over sized glasses range from 6 fl oz to funny shaped large glasses of 12 fl oz and over .
After the different sized glasses we come to the cocktail shaker. Cocktail Shaker is basically a device to mix the beverages, especially alcoholic, by shaking. There are three varieties of shakers:
The Boston Shaker: It is a two piece shaker with a stainless metal bottom and a glass. The stirring and muddling are done separately.
The Cobbler Shaker: It has three pieces with a taper at the top and the strainer which includes a cap.
The French Shaker : This is a two piece shaker with a metal bottom and a metal top. A strainer is required for barring the separation.
So what are you waiting for now... become a perfect cocktail maker at home... with a bit of perfection. As I said before, Cocktail is a drink of perfection and elegance. There should be a passion in making the drink and style in presentation.
Get to know more about the making of different cocktail drinks from 'The Savoy Cocktail Book' by Craddock, Harry. Visit our site www.coralhub.com for books on this topic.

"This is an aggressive beer. You probably won't like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to a safer and more familiar territory — maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it's made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beer will give you more sex appeal.

Pangaea: Not your everyday pale ale. In fact, I think this beer creates its own style category. When someone asks me about it, I have a difficult time describing it in few words. Light in color in body, ginger on the palate, slightly spicy and a crisp, clean finish. The best part about it is that it's one of those rare beers that pairs perfectly with food.

Strategic Investment Mixology:Finding the Holy Grail Cocktail

So what do your Investment Manager and your neighborhood bartender have in common, other than the probability that you spend more time with the latter during market corrections? Antoine Tedesco, in his "The History of Cocktails" article, lists three things that mixologists consider important to remember and to understand when making a cocktail: 1) the base spirit, which gives the drink its main flavor; 2) the mixer or modifier, which blends well with the main spirit without overpowering it; 3) the flavoring, which brings it all together.
Similarly, your Investment Manager needs to: 1) put together a portfolio that is based on your financial situation, goals, and plans, providing both a sense of direction and a framework for decision making; 2) use a well defined and consistent investment methodology that fits well with the investment plan without leading it in tangential directions; 3) exercise experienced judgment in the day-to-day decision making that brings the whole thing together and makes it grow.
Tedesco explains that new cocktails are the result of experimentation and curiosity; that they reflect the moods of society; and that they change rapidly as both bartenders and their customers seek out new and different concoctions to popularize. The popularity of most newbies is fleeting; the reign of the old stalwarts is history--- with the exception, perhaps, of "Goat's Delight" and "Hoptoad". But, rest assured, the "Old Tom Martini" is here to stay!
It's likely that many of the products, derivatives, funds, and fairy tales that emanate from Wall Street were thrown together over "ti many martunies" at Bobby Van's or Cipriani's, and just like alcohol, the addictive products created in lower Manhattan have led many a Hummer load of speculators down the Holland tubes. The financial products of the day are themselves, products of the moods of society. The wizards experiment tirelessly; the customers' search for the Holy Grail cocktail is endless. Curiosity kills many retirement plans.
Investment portfolio mixology doesn't take place in the smiley faced environment that brought us the Cosmo and the Kamikaze, but putting an investment cocktail together without the risk of addictive speculations, or bad after tastes, is a valuable talent worth finding or developing for yourself. The starting point should be a trip to portfolio-tending school, where the following courses of study are included in the Investment Mixology Program:
(1) Understanding Investment Securities. Investment securities can be divided into two major classes that make the planning exercise called asset allocation relatively straightforward. The purpose of the equity class is to generate profits in the form of capital gains. Income securities are expected to produce a predictable and stable cash flow in the form of dividends, interest, royalties, rents, etc.
All investment securities involve some form of risk, but risk can be minimized with appropriate diversification disciplines and sensible selection criteria. Still, regardless of your skills in selection and diversification, all securities will fluctuate in market price and should be expected to do so with semi-predictable, cyclical regularity.
(2) Planning Securities Decisions. There are three basic decision processes that require guideline development and procedural discipline: what to buy and when; when to sell and what; what to hold on to and why.
(3) Market Cycle Management. Most securities portfolio market values are influenced by the semi predictable movements of several inter-related economic cycles: interest rates, the IGVSI, the US economy, and the world economy. The cycles themselves will be influenced by Mother Nature, politics, and other short-term concerns and disruptions.
(4) Performance Evaluation. Historically, Peak-to-Peak analysis was most popular for judging the performance of individual and mutual fund growth in market value because it could be separately applied to the long-term cyclical movement of both classes of investment security. More recently, short-term fluctuations in the DJIA and S & P 500 are being used as performance benchmarks to fan the emotional fear and greed of most market participants.
(5) Information Filtering. It's important to limit information inputs, and to develop filters and synthesizers that simplify decision-making. What to listen to, and what to allow into the decision making process is part of the experienced managers skill set. There is just too much information out there, mostly self-motivated, to deal with in the time allowed.
Wall Street investment mixologists promote a cocktail that has broad popular appeal but which typically creates an unpleasant aftertaste in the form of bursting bubbles, market crashes, and shareholder lawsuits. Many of the most creative financial nightclubs have been fined by regulators and beaten up by angry mobs with terminal pocketbook cramps. The problem is that their concoctions include mixers that overwhelm and obscure the base spirits of the investment portfolio: quality, diversification, and income.
There are four conceptual ingredients that you need to siphon out of your investment cocktail, and one to add: (1) Considering market value alone when analyzing performance ignores the cyclical nature of the securities markets and the world economy. (2) Using indices and averages as benchmarks for evaluating your performance ignores both the allocation of your portfolio and the individuality of the securities you've selected.
(3) Using the calendar year as a measuring device reduces the investment process to a short-term speculation, ignores all financial cycles, increases the emotional volatility of the investment markets, and guarantees that you will be unhappy with whatever strategy or methodology you employ. (4) Buying any type or class of security, commodity, index, or contract at historically high prices and selling high quality companies or debt obligations for losses during cyclical corrections eventually causes hair loss and shortness of breath.
And the one to add--- The Working Capital Model.
Cheers!

The Benefits of Cocktail Training

Any individual, or bar owner or manager who is keen on teaching their bar staff the basic principles of great cocktails needs to start by understanding a little of the history of cocktails, including where all the classic evolved from and a bit of the glamour and intrigue behind the drinks. This will not only enhance their own appreciation of the art of cocktail making but can also help to entertain customers whilst preparing their drink.
The next step in becoming a confident cocktail bartender is the actual methodology, knowing your way around all the different bits of cocktail equipment, and learning when and how to muddle, stir or shake!
This then leads onto the actual art of cocktail production and how to pour and present the drinks themselves, giving the bartender skills that should be practised as often as possible in order to perfect the techniques.
Finally, it's important for all good cocktail bartenders to learn a range of classic and popular cocktail recipes so that they can easily make them to order in their workplace, or at least with a little help from a quick cheat sheet or recipe card tucked in behind the bar.
<!-- @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } -->
Once these skills are mastered, cocktail training allows bartenders to progress to the heady heights of mixology, creating their own recipes and techniques, contributing to drinks lists and in time entering the competition circuits or even the often lucrative paid work with drinks brands.
