Women Working For Mining Companies
Posted: Mar 15, 2011 |Comments: 0

Before mining companies even existed, gold rushes and boom towns attracted hundreds of thousands of people to the west in search of the illusive riches. If you've only seen movies like Wyatt Earp, you'd think most of these folks were gamblers or officers of the law, at least one clergyman, a bartender, and of course, women of easy virtue. When you think of actual gold miners, you picture old timers who panned for gold in rivers and creeks and "them thar hills." He'd be wearing a red checkered shirt, have a grizzly beard and a pick over his shoulder, and be towing his poor sway backed mule that carries all his gear. It is a pretty powerful image and very well known. Yet he wasn't the only miner who was out there searching for bits of the gold stuff. Chinese, Pacific Islanders, Mexicans, African Americans were also out there hoping to strike it rich. But, not everyone was "one of the boys." History will show there were many women prospectors and today they are employed by coal mining companies.
Dangerous and dirty as far as professions go, coal mining isn't for the "weekly manicure" type. A lot of women argue that mining is just for men, and don't understand why another woman would choose to work in a coal mine. In one controversial case, women miners weren't provided female changing rooms and had to change in men's rooms covered by sheets. Today, issues like this are quickly rectified by mining companies wanting to stay out of the news. North Country, starring the usually glamorous Charlize Theron, is a movie about a female coal miner who files for Sexual Harassment. Issues like this scare off the faint of heart. But those tough women working with a,' 'Woman Miners Can Dig It Too,'' attitude still choose the risky profession. And some do this "man's job" during the day, then head home to their families and perform housewife chores without skipping a beat.
Statistics estimate that for every 100 men who work for mining companies, there are only two women. One of these women could be the head of the company though. One such woman, Cynthia Carroll, heads one of the largest diversified mines in the world. Look out guys! Mining companies would have us believe that coal is a rather safe fuel if managed efficiently. Perhaps if working for coal companies was less environmentally hazardous, mining for coal would be as attractive as prospecting for gold and more women would choose mining as a profession.

How to Muddle
Posted: Feb 04, 2011 |
The expression muddle, is a technique where bartenders mash the contents of a drink together to allow for flavors to be combined in the drink.
Though you may not actually know about the phrase, it's almost certainly a skill which bartenders have been known to use for a long time to mix the beverages which you savor. After all, muddling ingredients might be utilized equally as frequently and is equally necessary as any other technique.
For the technique of muddling, materials are paired through grinding them together using a tool referred to as a muddler. The easiest way to muddle is right in the glass which is used to make the cocktail, and its conducted prior to the majority of the cocktail's liquid spirits are placed in the cup. Though it may seem as if the approach is surprisingly elementary, you'll discover there are in fact several techniques to muddle. In some cases people find that crushing the ingredients using a n up and down range of motion is the easiest best option. Other people choose a much less intense tactic simply by rotating the muddler to mix the ingredients. Others, still take advantage of a little of the two techniques to accomplish the perfect product. Nonetheless, the key to muddling is simply to use a muddler.
It doesn't matter if you have muddled before today or you've just found this handy practice you definitely should apply it to your drink building bible. What's the importance of muddling? Muddling can be the difference between creating a plain cocktail and one that is phenomenal. It magnifies the taste from specific ingredients, particularly fruits and herbs, that would otherwise be hidden if you just added them normally.
Now the next time a recipe calls for muddling, grab your muddler and muddle like a pro! The tip jar will love you for it.

3 Ways To Throw an Awesome College Party Without Spending a Dime
Posted: Dec 22, 2010 |Comments: 0

College parties are a huge part of the college experience; however, hosting a party at your place can cost you serious cash. The good news is that there are several things you can do to turn a good party into a great party without spending a dime.
Yes, having an ice luge is cool. So is hiring a DJ, buying expensive liquor, and paying a bartender. In reality, these aren't the things that lead to great parties. Sure, they can help... but there are more basic, fundamental things that make a party great.
Here are 3 to get you started:
1. Set the music in advance.
Whether you know it or not, music is one of the biggest keys to a solid party. Music sets the tone and mode of your place and has a direct impact on how you and your guests will ultimately perceive the party.
First, take the time to create the entire playlist in advance. Think about what most people will want to hear. Don't add songs that are "inside jokes" between you and a few of your friends. For each song you pick, try to envision it playing at the party and picture people's reactions to it.
Second, make sure you have a dependable source to play the music from. Make sure the sound quality is good and test the volume in different rooms of your place.
Lastly, try to prevent other people, namely your friends, from changing the song a million times throughout the night. If you're using an ipod, find a place to hide it. The added benefit of this is that it'll be less likely to be stolen.
2. Be a gracious host.
Being a gracious host involves more than getting drunk and yelling at people when they break things. This is YOUR party. Whether you want to admit it or not, you are in direct control of how good a time people have.
Keep an eye on the door and say hi to people shortly after they arrive. Introduce people that don't know each other. Scan the room often to see if anyone needs a drink or refill. Swing by the beer pong table with a fresh pitcher for the next game. Go out of your way to introduce yourself to friends of friends that you haven't met yet, and thank them for coming to your party.
Bottom line: being a good host is a perfect example of something that costs you nothing, but can go a long way in creating a great time for you and your guests.
3. Create a comfortable atmosphere.
There are 3 simple things you can focus on that will make a world of difference at your party: lighting, airflow, and cleanliness.
Lighting: there's a reason that restaurants and bars always use soft, warm lights instead of bright, florescent overhead lights. It's because they create a more comfortable atmosphere and give their customers a better feeling while there. The same tactic can and should be used at your parties.
Airflow: even if the temperature in your place seems comfortable early on, realize that the more people show up the warmer it gets. Turn the thermostat down 3-5 degrees, open front and back windows to create a cross-breeze, or set up a few fans... all of which should be done in advance.
Cleanliness: this should be self explanatory, but for most college students it isn't. Pick things up off the floor, break out the vacuum, and wipe down flat surfaces. Just because you don't mind living in filth doesn't mean your guests will like sitting in it. Make sure you spend an hour or two the afternoon before the party to clean your place and clear some space for people to sit.

Brothers and a Sister From Another Planet
One night several years ago at an Irish pub in the East Village of New York City, the discussion of music turned to disco. It involved musicians and people over 40 years-old, people who might know what they’re talking about. Several of us were, in the heyday of Studio 54 and the disco era, into punk rock. Others of us were -- me especially -- strictly jazz heads. I reminded my friend of lonely nights in college smoking out of a four-foot bong and listening to Zappa and John Coltrane and wondering how to meet girls. They were at the campus disco parties, while we were above it all. And alone, getting in touch with ourselves.
Now a guy walked into the bar - no, this is not a joke, this is true - leans over and asks Nancy, the bartender, to put on a CD he brought. He had a box set called 100 Disco Hits and wanted to hear it. She put it on over a few protests and by the third cut half the bar was up dancing. "This s**t is great, what were we thinkin’?" What were we thinking? The cuts that he played -- "Boogie Nights," "Disco Lady," "Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now" -- were all songs with soul power. Killer musicians, great singers, and songwriters that had some skills were at work on these gems. So many of the songs that turned off the young cynic back in the day -- and I was one of them -- now sound like musical versions of the politics of hope. Besides the quality of the music and the infusion of beer and liquor, these cuts stood out because the party music of today consists of desperate, vapid consumer fantasies "sung" over prepackaged, overly mechanized "music." From Justin Timberlake to Mariah Carey, this is what dance music is all about. Like rap agitators Public Enemy asked back in the ‘90's "who stole the soul?"
These memories and thoughts came to mind while listening to Koko Dozo’s new CD Illegal Space Aliens. The band members present themselves as bizarro characters. Chief producer Polarity/1, who created the beats and sounds that make the backbone of the music, dresses like a pro wrestling manager who is channeling Sun Ra. Though using synthesizer sounds, drum machines, and synth bass, his music has a distinctive, organic quality, a certain freshness and vitality. Rubio -- the self-described "multi-brained, Viking, Satanic wizard"; complete with Viking helmet and wizardly robe -- provides funky, jazzy keyboards that flesh out and add spice and musicality to the grooves. Singer Amy Douglas, the "Inter-Galactic Empress," looks like a grown up Punky Brewster turned dominatrix from Brooklyn by way of worlds beyond. But for all the outer spaceness of their image and electronic sounds, the music on Illegal Space Aliens is rooted in the organic soil of the disco, funk and soul of a bygone era.
The CD starts with dense electronic sounds that morph into a groove consisting of bass, a looped piano chord, and a beat made of these dense sounds, on the opening cut "Second Time." Amy Douglas brings flesh and soul to this cyborg of a song. With musical experience covering punk cabaret, funk with George Clinton and down-home jazz with Illinois Jacquet, she has the pipes. She also has the musicality and taste to do it just right. "Face on the Dance Floor" starts with disembodied female voices and a vocal loop of laughs. A house beat kicks in and Douglas busts out with a Donna Summers-like vocal blast: "You know you got that face... hold your face on the dance floor / wave your feet in the air / make us believe that you don’t care / smash your face on the dance floor / put your kicks in the air / wave it some more put your f****n’ face on the dance floor." The song grooves along with interesting musical riffs and keyboard counter melodies, as Douglas goes off. The backup group female voices come back and the song’s next verse comes in. These little touches elevate this and other songs on the CD above average, boring house and dance music. You can dig this music without drugs or dancing.
Some of the album’s cuts resemble the classic disco of the‘70's and ‘80's. "Boomchi" has that signature four-on-the-floor drum beat, offbeat funk bass lick, and soulful strings. The vocals come in like Chic’s classic "Good Times." Busting out in Spanish, Douglas lets fly some wailing diva vocal blasts. The song’s break down features bass drum, breathy, chanting vocals, and an over-the-top spew in Spanglish by Rubio. Euro disco brought in the dominance of synthesizers and more mechanical rhythms. "Shine" is in this mold, but the piano licks and, once again, Douglas’ voice gives the song a human face: "Shine a light / I need to know that I’m alive / Shine a light / guide me to your secret side / give me breath that can revive."
Koko Dozo mines other types of music, particularly the expansive side of soul and funk, on the slow jam "Down." This features sweet lead and backup vocals, as well as chords that move and glide in an extended middle part that seems to drift away. Then, from silence, the song starts up with vocals that remind one of soul diva’s like Chaka Khan. "D.C. Whore" combines political satire and discordant, complex funk. "Fulano de Tai" is dirge-like, with music that evokes the image of an emotional desert and recalls one of Ennio Morricone’s more psychedelic soundtracks.
One of the strengths of Illegal Space Aliens, and my regular readers please forgive me, is that there are nine choice cuts on this record. No fluff, just a statement. This should be the new trend. This should also be an example of how to make dance music that is intelligent and cool, not dumbed down to the level of morons in too-tight designer jeans.

How to Make a Tom Collins Cocktail
This drink is credited to a Mr John Collins, a bartender at the Limmers hotel in London in the 1800s. The drink was called the Tom Collins, taking its name from the use of Old Tom Gin, and apparently named after his brother. The sister of the Collins is the Fizz, which is a short Collins with charged water (from a soda siphon) and un-garnished. Add egg white to make a Silver Fizz; add the yolk and it becomes a Golden Fizz.

Watch The Fighter Movie 2010 Review Online

ABC will air "Pushing Daisies" in its usual time period on Wednesday night -- not the Barack Obama ad.
The news ends a guessing game that's been going on for nearly a month.
The Obama campaign purchased a half hour of airtime on NBC, Fox and CBS, spending about million per network. ABC was absent from the list when it was first reported Oct. 9 and the network has since remained silent about its programming intentions for the evening. With ratings for "Daisies" slipping, some have wondered whether the network would air "Daisies" as usual, air the Obama ad, or take the opportunity run something else entirely. It's not often a network has the major broadcast airwaves largely free of any competing entertainment programming.
One source said ABC offered the airtime, but the Obama campaign, for whatever reason, declined to buy an ad.
Perhaps the campaign decided ads running on three broadcast networks was sufficient, or decided to pour the money into, say, West Virginia.
Brotherly love takes a standing eight-count in The Fighter, then rallies for a knockout as two troubled brothers find a way to work together to make boxing history.
This true story about light welterweight boxer and perennial underdog "Irish" Micky Ward makes for less of a sports movie than a domestic drama about blue-collar brothers struggling to stay a family while the forces of drug addiction and parental ambition tear them apart.
While the film may have its Rocky-like moments, it reminds you more of the plays and films of the 1950s, which focused on tough realities faced by working-class people.
The film has been a pet project for its producer-star Mark Wahlberg. You can certainly see what stirred his passion in the against-all-odds physical and emotional journey of Micky Ward. It's an epic tale told with low-key, measured tones. But a host of writers and Wahlberg's Three Kings director David O. Russell never quite make the case that his story merits a major studio movie.
There is something a little too cartoonish about Micky's completely impossible family and also something a little too short-sighted in a protagonist who can't see the obvious â that his family, and not other fighters, is what stands in his way as a boxer. Paramount will be pushing The Fighter in a number of awards categories when it opens December 10.
If Wahlberg hits the PA trail and critics respond, the film stands a chance for moderate box office and a nom or two. But the feeling persists that this is one that got away, that the film Wahlberg envisioned is not the film that ultimately got made. A central conflict never comes into clear focus. There's a lot going on in the early scenes, all set in the characters' hometown of Lowell, Masachusetts.
Wahlberg's Micky, who is working on a road paving crew, is aiming to return to boxing after a hiatus brought about by a string of defeats. His older half-brother, Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale), himself a former boxer who once fought Sugar Ray Leonard and therefore Micky's childhood hero, is his trainer. Only Dickie spends most of his time in a crack house. A documentary film crew follows Dickie around making a film about his "comeback" as the brothers' fiercely possessive mother, Alice (Melissa Leo in a startlingly strident performance), arranges fights that don't improve Micky's career ambitions one bit.
Meanwhile, Micky spots an attractive bartender, college dropout Charlene (Amy Adams), and a relationship sputters to life. It soon is clear enough that Charlene is the only character in the film who is not delusional. Dickie is no trainer but a crack-head, and the documentary crew is actually making an HBO movie about addiction, not sports comebacks. Alice has no business managing her son's career but the son needs his new girlfriend to set him straight about his family. Dicke helps Charlene's cause when he gets busted and sent to prison. The mom has had nine kids and all the rest are lay-about sisters, who smoke, watch TV and make snide remarks about Charlene. Whatever the actual reality of the Ward/Eklund family, the portrayal here is so exaggerated that it seems at times more like a spoof of a Sundance dysfunctional-family film.
What's not clear is why Micky never spots any of this dysfunction. Perhaps he does yet worries about losing his hero and his mom at the same time. However, Charlene gives him the backbone to challenge both of them so for a while his career takes off. Yet when Dickie returns from prison and he and mom want to get back on Micky's boxing team, he dithers once more. Wahlberg's Micky is always levelheaded. He understands his attributes and drawbacks as a fighter. He wins fights through a strategy: He is willing to absorb brutal punishment in the ring until he can seize the opportunity to land a devastating body blow.
Similarly, in life, Micky absorbs his family's best shots until he can find a way to bring them back into his inner circle. He's a family guy, for sure. The script by Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson (from a story by Tamasy, Johnson and Keith Dorrington) sees Micky as unnervingly patient. His greatest fear is of failure. He wants to live up to an image Dickie put in his mind when he was a kid, an impression so strong that he doesn't realize that it disintegrated long ago.Meanwhile Dickie would probably be a clown even if he weren't stoned. He has an ex-fighter's loose limbs and rubbery body. He likes to make faces and joke around with people. Whether intended or not, his speech pattern is that of a man whose brain has been rattled once too often inside his head.
The real enigma here though is Alice. What makes her tick? Leo plays her with a pinched, determined face and overly styled hair, a woman missing the gene for maternal instincts. Her "love" for her two boys depends on how much they believe mother knows best. Somewhere along the line, the movie pretty much gives up trying to understand her so she is relegated to ringside seats rooting for Micky.
The most luminous personality in the film belongs to Adams' Charlene. She too is a woman who takes charge but she does it through strength of character and love. Her bad-girl days are behind her so she understands a thing or two about comebacks: They only work if you see no other option.
The boxing sequences get bunched toward the end. Russell deliberately shoots them in brightly lit video that makes it look like you're watching television. He has broadcasters and ringsiders comment on the fights, but seldom takes you close enough to hear what Dickie might be saying to Micky. You're outside the ring, not inside. So like much of this film, the viewer is turned into an observer. You never feel close enough to the action, either in the ring or in the kitchens, living rooms and tough streets where the story takes place. The characters engage you up to a point but never really pull you in.

Getting a Job in Japan: Japanese Speaking Ability - While Not a Requirement, It Has Its Advantages

Okay, well a common question I get when I meet people currently living in Japan as well as traveling through Japan is "do I need to speak Japanese to get a job in Japan?" To answer this question, it really depends on what exactly you mean by a job. Are you looking for something fun that will provide you with a salary and some freedom, or are you looking for something more, such as a career, something that will provide you with a nice salary and potential growth and career advancement?
If the answer to this question was the former, then there are plenty of these jobs, but most involve you teaching English, being a recruiter, or bartending at a bar. These are the most common jobs held by individuals living in Japan that cannot speak Japanese. Of course, this is not an exhaustive list, as there are other jobs available, but these are the most common. Now, as with any country, if you possess a skill or trade that very few people can match, there is always a job for you and you will always be sought after; whether you speak Japanese or not.
Let's say something very specialized, like a scientist that studies and creates new drugs. I'm pretty sure these people have jobs here in Japan and are required to use very little Japanese, if any at all. But if you were one of these people you would already know this. Another example is an amazing American football player. There is an American football league here in Japan and there are several teams here in Japan that have recruited and paid talented American football players to play on their team. They give them an imaginary job at their company (like Toshiba, Panasonic, etc.) with a real desk to sit at and a salary of over 100k USD to play football. Their teammates even learn basic plays and calls in English so that they can communicate on the field, all because he is a valuable asset and can run faster and throw the ball farther. So if you have something to offer that can't be beaten, the rules that apply to Joe the plumber, don't apply to you.
Okay, so let's not get off topic too much. Where are these jobs available and to who? Well, the above list I gave you, the only job that applies to areas outside of Tokyo, Japan are the English teachers. You could easily get a job teaching English anywhere in Japan, or any country for that matter, and it's pretty much the only job you could get anywhere in Japan without speaking Japanese. But, you are probably reading this article, or at least I hope you are, to find ideas and answers on how to find a rewarding career in Japan in a industry with upward and outward mobility. Hence, you are probably not looking for ways to find an English teaching job in the mountains of Japan, so let's move on.
Now, that leaves us pretty much with Tokyo as being the only area to really find work in Japan. This is not to say you couldn't find a job in Osaka, Kobe, or Yokohama, some of the largest cities in Japan outside of Tokyo. But, it would be extremely difficult, as most of the jobs are in Tokyo. It's the same reason most Japanese relocate to Tokyo for work. For example, rather than you having 300 companies to choose from in Tokyo you will have something more like 2 when outside of Tokyo. Opportunities are just more limited and the number of jobs and the industries outside of Tokyo are simply scarce, especially for the foreign worker. For the most part, everything happens in Tokyo. The Japanese relocate to Tokyo from other prefectures to get a job, because good jobs are far and few between in other cities and unless you want to work in a factory, retail store, restaurant, or sell potatoes out of a street vendor cart, you will need to look towards Tokyo for a job.
If you wish to be a headhunter, there are plenty of opportunities in Tokyo to do this as well. The payout is nice, so I hear, but it's not really a job that offers you much career growth, and it's definitely not a job for everyone. You will and should end up being a fantastic sales person and reader of people, but other than that, there is not much to further expand upon. However, this might be a good career path as a jumping point. You can meet many people, network, see what jobs suit your tastes and then at the right time interview out to these companies and start your career.
Another industry in Tokyo often found to be filled with many foreigners that cannot speak Japanese, is the financial industry. There are plenty of people in Tokyo working for the Merrill Lynch's and Morgan Stanley's of the world. But of course most of these people come from backgrounds in finance and have been relocated to Japan on expatriate packages, so you are not probably reading this article if you are currently working at one of these companies. However, if you are just starting out your career in the states and you wanted to work in an international setting, this is one career that you can look into, as financial investors are able to work pretty much anywhere in the world that has a market and typically the local language is not really a prerequisite. I would say your best fields of study that will allow you to work in most major cities in the world are Finance, IT, and Sales.
The Typical Industries in Tokyo Catering to Non-Native Japanese Speakers
So I have stated several times that most of the non-Japanese speaking jobs are located in Tokyo, but what are these industries? You can think of Tokyo being the central hub for the following industries, IT, Consulting, Finance, Design, and well, pretty much everything. Tokyo does it all and is it all. The country has concentrated most of it's business world in the heart of Tokyo with small business centers located outside of Tokyo in Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and Yokohama, but Tokyo is really the heart that fuels this island.
Yes, you can get a job in any of the following industries, IT, Consulting, Finance, and Design but you will need to be bringing skills to the table to get these jobs. Otherwise, they will just hire the Japanese guy speaking to the left of you in the interview room, regardless how ridiculously unqualified he/she is. To be honest, most Japanese companies prefer to simply hire Japanese people over foreigners. And on that note, I highly recommend you to work for a foreign investment company or a Japanese company that is very western in their thinking (i.e. Rakuten or Uniqlo).
You will most likely be frustrated day in and day out working for a traditional Japanese company, they just aren't for us. Japanese have grown up their entire life with Japanese culture and thinking they way they do, and that mirrors the culture in Japanese companies, if you think things are strange or difficult now, do you really want to experience that 8 hours a day Monday to Friday as well? They simply think differently and don't value their employees in the same way YOU would expect a company to.
I have spoken to many headhunters and recruiters in Tokyo, and they have told me that their clients, Japanese companies, will explicitly tell them that "This job requires a Japanese person". Not a non-Japanese that is fully bilingual in Japanese, not a person that was born in Japan and went to Japanese school from the age of 4 to 21 and speaks fluent Japanese, but a JAPANESE PERSON. That's a requirement and not just a request in a candidate search. So once you have fully understood this simple fact, then you can proceed with looking for a job with a Japanese company.
But I would only recommend working for a Japanese company if you wish to have the experience to help you understand how the Japanese think and act so that you can compete with them in a future company. But for a long-term career, I recommend to look towards the foreign investment companies for a job, they will understand your needs and goals better and should result in a overall better quality of life. But whether you are looking for a Japanese company or foreign one in these industries, a conversational level or above in Japanese will most likely be required.
To go back to English teachers briefly, this is their main struggle with getting out of a teaching job in Japan. Most of them have no work experience or any tested skill or trade outside of English teaching and a college diploma (some don't even have this). But they want to change jobs and have a more rewarding job/career. Most of these English teachers came to Japan immediately after college and haven't gained any real world work experience, which also hinders them. Usually their limited work experience and lack of a technical or specific skill hinders them from ever leaving the English teaching industry. For those of you reading this before graduating, I highly recommend you get a part time job to gain experience before coming to Japan if you plan to come here via teaching English. This will allow you to have more options and set you apart from your peers.
So given this bit of information, we must focus on getting a job that we will be adding value and be a valuable asset to our employer. Given that you have experience, it is possible to get hired as an Engineer by an IT firm or as a designer by a Design company. But the challenge you will now face is your ability to speak Japanese. This is where having the Japanese ability can make or break getting the job. I can't express how important it is to speak Japanese, at least at a comfortable conversational level. Business level isn't really a requirement, as long as you can get through the interview and convince the hiring person that you will be an asset to the company.
You have to think about what your potential employer makes his/her decisions based on. Not all people think like me, but when I am interviewing for my staff I give percentages to categories I have predefined.
These categories depend on the job I am interviewing for, but here is one for example:
1. Customer Service skill/ability
2. IT knowledge
3. Japanese language ability
4. Eagerness to advance and grow
5. Initiative and ability to handle tasks with little to no supervision.
Now, for a staff that will take on an engineer role 100% of the time, I would be most concerned with his IT knowledge, ability to handle tasks with little to no supervision, and then his Japanese language ability. However, if I have two candidates I am interviewing and one of them has a much better speaking ability in Japanese but a little behind in the technical skill than the other candidate I would probably go with the less skilled technical person. The reason being, he should be able to easily and quickly pick up the IT skills he is lacking and at the same time be able to use Japanese with his clients and make them feel more relaxed and comfortable.
Remember, it's always about making the other person happy and comfortable, number one rule to customer service. A good engineer can make a mistake but since he cannot explain himself in Japanese, the customer is left upset and feeling he/she has received bad service. Whereas, a less experienced engineer can screw up several times on very basic things but because he can speak Japanese, apologize and make the customer feel cared for, the customer walks away feeling confident that the engineer thoroughly cares about them and he/she is trying his/her hardest. And in Japan, customer service and the amount of effort you give is 10x more important than the actual ability of the person to do the job.
So in conclusion, yes, you can in fact get a job here in Japan without speaking Japanese, but if you're looking for a job that you can enjoy and grow with career-wise, you will want to invest in a Japanese language book if you have not already done so. Start reading, studying, and interacting with the local Japanese, you will only benefit from doing this and enjoy your Japanese experience only that much more.
Good luck on your career and job search! All the best! Ganbatte kudasai!

Living In The Land Of The Rising Sun
A friend recently asked me what it's actually like for a non-Japanese person to live in Japan. There is so much that is different here, and it takes a lot of getting used to, including the language, the culture and customs, and of course the food. Living here entails many challenges like finding an apartment, getting a driver's license, arranging health insurance and so on. However, it's a beautiful country with friendly, hospitable people, and there are many adventures to be had.

Cabbage Key, Florida - A Million Miles Away - Ten Miles From Home

The game plan was simple: take a short and scenic cruise on Pine Island sound, grab a cheeseburger in paradise and catch the return boat back home. A three hour tour, five at most, just a small dose of the local waterways, that's all we wanted.
Across the Sanibel causeway we drove, heading for McCarthy's Marina on Captiva Island. Not a cloud in the sky. Light traffic and lush, tropical foliage surrounded us. Glimpses of glistening water and quiet beaches tucked themselves between trees and down side streets and driveways.
Once we reached the marina, we visited the office of Captiva Cruises, clutching half-off discount coupons and reminding ourselves how great it is to live in our little corner of paradise in the off-season. No crowds. No lines. Nothing but azure and emerald Florida in every direction.
Tickets in hand, we relaxed on the dock, absorbing the quiet beauty. Birds flitted along the shoreline. A few fishing tournament stragglers were trying their luck at the vast schools of silvery snook flashing in the shallows beneath the docks. The waterfront residences, empty and uninhabited, invited our eyes and imaginations. Those who can afford such houses very rarely have the time to occupy them. Those who would love to occupy them very rarely have the means to afford them. Capitalism and beauty seem to meet at a paradox.
The Lady Chadwick, Captiva Cruise's flagship vessel, patiently awaited us at the end of the dock. Two or three staff members were scurrying within her, preparing for the daily outing. When boarding time arrived, at 10:00 am, only a handful of others were there to take the trip with us.
The Lady Chadwick is a classic 65 foot long cruise boat, with a climate controlled main cabin and a canopied and open air upper deck. Both levels are carpeted. It has a full service cocktail bar, and spacious men's and women's facilities. It was built to carry 148 passengers. There were only 12 others traveling with us on this particular cruise. With such a small group, it felt like a private charter.
Our boat was on schedule to meander through Pine Island Sound towards its two ports of call. The first stop would be Cabbage Key, an "Old Florida" island hideaway with a restaurant and inn. The second was Useppa Island, an historic retreat and private club for the well-to-do. Somewhere along the course of our hour long narrated cruise, it became apparent we were the only ones getting off the boat at Cabbage Key. Everyone else had tickets to tour Useppa, leaving us wondering if we'd made a tragic mistake in choosing our itinerary.
Two midmorning Bloody Mary rounds from the ship's well equipped bar put our anxieties to rest, as we glided across the smooth sheet of sea past Upper Captiva and Cayo Costa. Quirky spoken-word histories of local significance were playfully passed down to us by the guide. There were stories of destructive hurricanes, creative artists and free land given away on Sanibel Island.
We'll be picking you up no later than 2 pm. If you're not on the boat by the time we sound the horn, they've got some great rooms...you can spend the night in on the island.
Before long we made the final approach to Cabbage Key. A few small cottages and docks teased the shore of the 85 acre mangrove island. The fauna was thick with cabbage palms (which give the island its name) and bougainvillea. A peaceful marina harbor with a tiny white boathouse and weathered docks awaited us. The harbormaster, looking like a hot and tired Hemingway, guided the Lady Chadwick into its temporary slip. The ramp was extended and we were escorted off the boat. Our cruise-mates waved goodbye as they pulled away and headed for Useppa island, leaving us behind.
The main focal point of Cabbage Key is the restaurant overlooking the harbor. The restaurant doubles as an inn with six overnight guest rooms. There are also six detached cottages available to rent. But it's the restaurant that draws most of the 500 travelers who visit each day of the in-season for lunch. That said...this is the off-season. Perched atop an immense 38 foot Calusa Indian shell mound, the restaurant and inn sits tranquil amidst the few royal poinciana trees surrounding it.
Long told local rumors pinpoint this restaurant as the inspiration for Jimmy Buffett's song, "Cheeseburger in Paradise". While Jimmy Buffett did visit this restaurant, and probably even ate the cheeseburger, I'm afraid I have to be the one to stop the perpetuation of this easily unproven factoid. Jimmy Buffett has repeatedly placed *the* "Cheeseburger in Paradise" at a small bar in Roadtown, Tortola. At Cabbage Key it's still a cheeseburger, and it's still paradise...but that's as close as the legend ever comes to truth.
Our appetites dragged us up the shell walkway to the front porch of the restaurant. Classic rock sang from outdoor speakers. A young male employee offered us the option of indoor or outdoor seating.
"Which do you suggest?"
"Our indoor seating is an interesting experience...the walls and ceilings are covered in thousands of dollar bills."
Indoor it was, and dollar bills there were, over 50,000 of them, to be exact. To walk through the piano bar and into the rear screened dining porch is akin to entering a cave made of money. Dollar bills wave in the island breeze, some are yellowing, some are covering other dollar bills, and all of them have two things in common: names written on them in black magic marker and lots and lots of masking tape.
Built in 1938 by mystery fiction novelist Mary Roberts Rinehart and her son, the restaurant and inn probably look just as they did almost 70 years ago. Everything is still in its original condition, from the rough wood floors to the rustic furniture. Even the dollar bills were around in those long gone days. The first bill was signed and taped up by a fisherman in 1941, as a way of ensuring he'd have the funds to purchase more alcohol on his return trip. The next time he arrived, he had money to spare and left the bill hung up where it was. Other customers soon followed suit. Now the roughly 3,000 bills that routinely fall to the floor each year are all donated to charities.
Throughout the years some noteworthy bills have shown up, including those signed by John F Kennedy Jr., Julia Roberts, Bart Simpson creator Matt Groening, ex-president Jimmy Carter, and one by the cheeseburger man himself, Mr. Jimmy Buffet (his was the first dollar bill ever taped onto the piano, but is framed behind the bar now). Walter Cronkite, Ted Koppel, Sean Connery, and Ernest Hemingway are also among some of the many celebrities who are known to have had a soft spot for time spent at Cabbage Key.
Stained and wrinkled menus led us to our orders of tropical mixed drinks and cheeseburgers. Cabbage Creepers sealed our fates, pina colada mixed with rum and a Kahlua float. Two-a-piece of these coconut mind-lubricants and spontaneity became our destiny. Comments became dangerous and day-changing. Peer pressure and an island-instilled sense of adventure led to new plans.
"Imagine what it would be like to spend the night here."
That was all it took to elevate our experience to the next level. Somewhere between the cheeseburger and key lime pie, from within the vibrant fog cast by the Cabbage Creepers coursing through our veins, the idle thought slowly began to become reality. Our waitress overheard our conversation and sent over a female manager. Minutes later she was giving us a tour of a two bedroom cabin, assuring us she could make all the arrangements with Captiva Cruises to stop them from coming to pick us up. She said she would make the necessary phone calls to have us picked up tomorrow. Are we really doing this? And before we knew it, we were down at the white-wooden boathouse gift-shop, giddy and giving her our credit card to charge the cabin on. I can't believe we're doing this. It was a done deal.
When the alcohol began to wear off we found ourselves completely stranded on an island with no paved roads and no general store. We were escaping the punishing humidity, sprawled out in the stark cabin, thanking modern-humanity for the air conditioning. The television had three fuzzy channels. The radio had one broken speaker. There were a few random magazines with last year's news shouting urgently from their covers. On a shelf was a Gideon bible. Our cabin had a large screened-in wraparound porch, the front facing Pine Island Sound and the rear facing mangrove swamp.
We trudged down to the tiny gift store by the docks, assuming they must sell bottled water. They sell T-shirts, Christmas ornaments, and novels by Randy Wayne White and John D. Mills. That's it. You'll find no water or snacks here. The restaurant on the mound is the only game in town. They've got you, and they know it. Tropical alcoholic drinks always lead to dehydration, and our tally for the six 12-ounce bottles of water we needed to bring back to our cabin was before tipping the bartender.
It occurred to us, around this time, that we'd brought no change of clothes, no hair care products, no toothbrushes, no deodorant, nothing but cameras and money. We were stuck with our dirty and sweaty selves until 2 pm the next day. Looking at the clock, I saw it was 1:30 pm...only a little over 24 hours left to go.
The oppressive heat limited our entertainment options. Denial kept entering our minds, demanding there must be somewhere to purchase a few of the items and beverages we were craving. If only we'd come prepared. We told ourselves stories about how next time we're bringing a cooler full of water and soft drinks with us, extra clothes, hygiene products.
"What should we do now?"
"We could read some of that bible."
"Let's go for a walk...they've got nature trails.'
"You want to walk in this heat?"
"We'll just stay here for awhile and go for a walk when it cools down a little."
Cabbage Key forced us to talk and think. We talked to each other about the scenery. About nature. About family. About God. We talked and thought in ways we never would've without being stuck on an island with no way to leave. We faced our appetites. We pondered all the routine comforts we take for granted in our day to day lives, drawing the lines between simple actions and the abundant comfort those actions deliver us. Fresh clothes. A trip to the refrigerator. Our comfortable beds.
After 5 pm Cabbage Key quieted. Boat traffic ended and the population of the island dwindled down to the scant visitors staying overnight and employees (who all live there full time). A sedating calm fell over the grounds. A large gopher tortoise, sensing the tourists were gone, came out from wherever it is they come from and began patrolling the wide expanse of lawn. An osprey in a nearby tree minded the goings-on below. Dark clouds offered solace from the sun. Lightning in the near distance offered eye candy. A faint thunder rumble filled the air. The storms never approached.
We walked the nature trail, towards the depths of the island. Gumbo limbo, seagrape, live oak and more mangroves climbed the sides of the path, in some instances providing a canopy of green. Salty mud and organic decay filled the air, noxious perfume of low tide, death, rebirth, and the food chain. Geckos and fiddler crabs skittered across the way, ducking into undergrowth and holes in the marsh as we approached. A wrong turn in the poorly marked trail led us to a distant and overgrown, shell-scattered dead end.
Dinner reservations are taken at check-in. The proprietors must know an anticipated meal is a psychological balm in this setting. Ours were for 7:30. We gave in at 7:00 and headed for the restaurant.
Darker and lit with small twinkling lights, evening scents of night blooming flowers waft through the screened dining room. The dinner menu is limited and a bit pricey. Beverage refills are never free at Cabbage Key. Thick with atmosphere and the dull buzz of the few others among us, we ordered our food. Meals were cooked to perfection. The chink in this restaurant's armor was found in our waiter. The service was not commensurate with either the ambiance or the prices being paid. Mistakes in the final bill were many and a time-consuming inconvenience. With only a handful of tables occupied, there was no reasonable excuse.
Making the most of it, we put our dinner experience behind us and went to sit on the deserted docks. The harbormaster sat in a dark corner having an animated conversation on his cellular phone about an approaching tropical storm. Imagine weathering out the storm here. These moments felt film-noir, with the cinema-perfect island around us, subdued lighting on the looming restaurant, dark motionless sea water at our feet, and Key Largo palms bending in tropical form.
Back at the cabin, conversation soon turned to the ghost stories surrounding Cabbage Key. Printed on the internet and in haunt-hunter books, legend often places the apparition in room number 3 of the main inn. As the story goes, a guest of the Rhinehart's contracted tuberculosis in New York and came to the inn to recover. While waiting for her family to join her, she died of complications from the illness. Now, those who stay in this room are frequently woken by a woman entering from the private patio. She is said to have long, dark hair and is dressed in a blue skirt and long-sleeved white blouse. Wandering in, she often looks at those in the bed before retreating to the patio once again, without ever opening the door.
Staff members have been known to tell other chilling stories regarding physical manifestations of spirits in the main inn. Some involve objects moving significant distances with no one ever touching them. Other stories have more of a Calusa Indian burial ground slant to them. However, popular knowledge has it that the current owners do not want the haunting stories told, and will deny them when asked. Information must be gleaned from the employees who work there, and even then, only when the owners are nowhere to be seen.
Putting the lights out around midnight, the darkness was darker than it is at home. A strong wind was kicking up outside, and the cabin felt to slightly sway on its stilts. Images of ghosts and devious shadows smeared themselves across the insides of our heads in smudged mind-colors. I wish we had a night light. Spiders and alligators roamed in the imagined terrain surrounding our beds. Door locks were triple-checked. This is the closest I've ever stayed to home and the farthest away I've ever felt.
We woke to forgotten dreams and a new day, clean sun streamed in through the windows. There was blue sky and wispy clouds overheads as we took our traditional and reasonably priced breakfasts on the open veranda. Sun sparkling waves heightened our spirits, and those of the others around us, the dreadlocked vegan family and the romantic getaway couple. I wonder if their experience last night was like ours? The staff was bright-eyed and conversational.
Another spontaneous idea and a phone call to customer-service-conscious Captiva Cruises got our adventure adrenaline pumping again. They agreed to pick us up as they dropped today's Cabbage Key guests off. They would transport us to Useppa Island and then back home at no additional cost. Those half-off tickets got us quite a distance down the road.
Before the boat arrived to take us to storybook Useppa, and our incredible lunch at the Collier Inn, we climbed the water tower which is at the highest point of the mound on Cabbage Key. From 60 feet we looked at the green bumps protruding in batches all over Pine Island Sound, small islands where plants and animals grow undisturbed, much as they did before human beings ever existed. We weren't speaking, but I'm pretty sure that within us all a keen appreciation was settling in, an understanding that we'd learned more in the last 24 hours than we realized, that by escaping our routine way of acting we allowed ourselves to grow, to live, and to create a lasting memory which was still being formed as we sat there silent with late morning sun on our smiling faces.

Bartenders â What They Think When You Ask For a Drink
Posted: Apr 22, 2010 |Comments: 0

They are the gatekeepers of a good night, standing behind their bar fortresses, deciding who will be the next person served, and who will just have to wait. Most people agree that one of the unavoidable hassles of heading to your favourite bar or nightclub is the line up for drinks, which ironically is worse the more popular the venue is â however be that as it may, the wait is generally worth it. The elite bar and nightclub enthusiast knows that there are tricks to get served quicker, which largely involves getting on good terms with the person behind the bar, ensuring that when it's your round, you spend more time drinking and less time waiting in line sobering up.
To assist the bar and nightclub novices, we decided to interview an ex bartender to find out what makes them tick and get the down low on how to get served first time, every time:
1.Cash out â No wallets.
They're busy and you want to get drunk quickly so this one should be a no brainer. If your money is ready to go, then everyone is happy. Sounds obvious, but after 4 or 5 drinks it can get a little tricky.
2.Don't shout or complain
The biggest mistake a bar or nightclub enthusiast can make. If for some reason someone gets served before you don't crack the shits at the bartender. Chances are it's an honest mistake rather than a vendetta against you. If this happens to you suck it up and move on (the other person probably read this article already)
3.Make eye contact
Subtle yet effective, if you make eye contact with the bartender then you are in for sure. Once you've made eye contact, the person behind the bar knows your ready to order and has a reason to serve you, rather than having to select someone from the sea of flailing arms.
4.Lean forward (for girls)
If it's a guy behind the bar, and you're a girl⦠well⦠you get the picture.
5.Decide what you want before you get served
Whatever you do, don't wait for the person behind the bar to ask what you want before making up your mind. This is probably one of the most annoying things in the world and slows everyone down. Think about it before you get the bar, and if you haven't decided just order a glass of wine or a beer⦠you can't go wrong.
6.Don't order vodka, lemon, lime and bitters
This has been voted the most annoying drink to make, so don't order it, because the person behind the bar will remember you and be less inclined to serve you next time â in anycase after 5 it tasted the same as a vodka and lemon.
7.Tip after your 1st drink
Call it a tip, call it a bribe, if you give them money they will want to serve you quicker â pretty straight forward but very effective.
8.Always say "Thank you"
Hmmmmmmm just because you're drunk doesn't mean manners goes should go out the proverbial window. Say thank you as you will be one of the few tat do, and be remembered for it.
